Nobody lies to Sultan. That is how the arrangement works.
Sultan has spent his whole life in the canopy, holding on with all four hands. In his forest, promises are kept in knotted cord and a family's future is counted in fruit. So when an upright stranger crouches at his height and tells him he has been chosen, his family sells their home, and eleven households pledge seasons they cannot spare to send him over the mountains.
In the country of stone trees, Sultan is brilliant. He learns to sit still for hours, to lower his voice, to stop hanging at night, to hide the parts of himself people notice first. He rises to the top of his class and into the very institutions that recruited him, and there he begins to see how the arrangement really works. No one in it is cruel. Everyone is simply doing their job.
The Highest Branch is a literary novel about ambition, belonging, identity negotiation and the price of becoming legible in someone else's world.
Drawn from the author's personal life experiences, years of research and work with students from more than seventy countries.
